Growing My Social Capital

1) I had no success making contact with anyone who I would consider being a domain expert.

2) I met with the manager at a local automotive electronics store. Being that my product is an electronic for vehicles it seemed an appropriate individual to contact for the industry and my expert in the market. I met him through my father who has done business with him before with our cars here at home. I reached out to them in person at their store to speak with them. With him I spoke how he got started and what has he done to remain in business through the years and maintain that success. They did me the favor of informing me about the automotive electronic industry locally and with this I can see what the market is for my area and my idea. Having this conduct is important because it could be a business relationship where he could do the installation for the product for customers.

3) I had no success making contact with anyone who I would consider being a supplier expert.

Reflection: In the future I would put some more time and energy making the necessary contacts, I know it is a hit or miss when it come to these things. I just made sure to keep my head up because not hearing back from individuals did not feel good but is just motivation to make improvements and to try again. This did differ from my networking experiences in the past because I have mostly done it solely in person so having to go through social media, emails, etc. was a little more difficult for me.

  1. That's a shame that you could not find people to work with you on the domain section of the assignment. In my experience I also felt that it was difficult to find people, so sometimes I had to stretch it and find a person who fit into to certain aspects of expertise. Nonetheless it looks like the manager you found was helpful and seemed to provide good insight into what you're looking for. Contacts are important but difficult and it is good that you are seeing this now before you really get going. It'll give you more room to plan.

  2. Hey Louis. I think that it's good that you found a contact at the electronic automotive store. One contact is better than none at all. Having that contact as an adviser for the tech development of your product is essential, and it would be a good move to have that same contact in charge of customer service and product installation. In the future, I hope that have an easier time finding the people who you need for your product's vision.

  3. I believe you could've found a domain and supply expert through a higher end car company's corporate operations as they often are open to discussing safety features. A domain expert would likely be a bit hard to reach though because they are likely a higher executive.

  4. Hi Louis,

This assignment must have been difficult for you, given who your domain and supply experts are likely highly paid executives that are very difficult to get a hold of. It is good that you were able to at least extend your social capital by at least one, which is better than none! Perhaps starting this assignment very early would have given you enough time to make enough phone calls to establish contact with a domain and supply expert. But if you’re like me, you may have not. Great job anyway, keeping your head up and doing what you could.
